Tickets for today’s show are no longer available from the Stanford Ticket Office. Tickets are available at the door. The Dinkelspiel Auditorium box office opens one and a half hours prior to the show.

The Stanford Savoyards, founded in 1973, announce their 92nd production, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, or the Town of Titipu.

When Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, fails to decapitate citizens of Titipu, whose head gets the axe in this Meiji-era inspired version of The Mikado?

Directors Evan Schaeffer and Rachel Whalon, inspired by the political and cultural events occurring in Japan during 1885, the year The Mikado premiered in London, recreate the feel of the Meiji era – a period when Japanese culture opened itself to foreign influences, including Western ideas and innovations. Respecting Japanese history and tradition, the Directors bring a modern comic sensibility to this signature Gilbert & Sullivan romantic comedy.

Music Director Joseph Haletky, a founder of the Savoyards who has directed and performed with many Bay Area choruses and theater ensembles, as well as world-renowned symphonic choruses, brings 40 years of musical experience to this almost–but not quite–traditional production. The Titipu Community Orchestra is comprised of over 20 Bay Area professional and amateur musicians.

About the Savoyards: The Stanford Savoyards, a student-run community theatre company dedicated to Gilbert & Sullivan, produce two fully-staged and orchestrated operettas in Dinkelspiel Auditorium per season. The Savoyards are known for putting clever spins on the traditional G&S opus, often paying homage to pop culture phenomena, such as Bollywood, Firefly and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
