Grades 7-8 Overview

In this section for students who are currently in grades 7-8 at school, our host and visiting guest mathematicians and educators will share their favorite topics in mathematics. These topics fall outside the normal school curriculum but are accessible to motivated middle school students with an existing passion for mathematics. Students who are new to extracurricular math enrichment are welcome to register for this class, but strong middle-school math skills are needed to fully enjoy most sessions.

Questions and Answers

Can I take a course if I live outside of California?
Yes! Students from any geographic location are welcome to enroll in the online classes. Students are expected to attend all live online classes, and should only register for sections that are appropriate for their schedule and time zone. Please note that all class times are in Pacific Time.

Can I sign up for a different grade level than the grade I am in at school?
Please register for a course that is in your current grade level. Many Math Circle participants perform above grade level in math, and we ask students to register in their current grade level so that they can learn amongst peers their age.

Is there anything we need to do for the first class?
Before the first class, please ensure that your computer meets the system requirements for Canvas (help article) and Zoom (help article). Please note that the Stanford Math Circle team will provide access to Canvas closer to the start of the course.

When will I receive course access information?
Information on accessing the online course will be emailed to you from the precollegiate@stanford.edu email account within a few days from the start date.

Will I need to purchase course materials?
Students will not need to purchase any textbooks or course materials, aside from basic school supplies such as paper, notebooks, and pencils.

What is the policy for course switches and refunds?

Course Switch Requests

To change a registration to another section: You will need to re-register online (subject to availability) and request a refund less a $50 fee for your original registration by forwarding your receipt email to registrations@stanford.edu by April 4, 2025 at 10:00am Pacific Time. Please read the refund policy below. You do not need to sign the waiver form again. Registrations are not transferable to another student.

Refund Policy

The deadline to request a refund is April 4, 2025 at 10:00am Pacific Time.

There are no exceptions for waiving refund fees, grade or section changes or tuition credit toward a future quarter - regardless of the reasons and timing. Communication is via email only.

Your order will be refunded less a $50 fee without notice if you didn't register for the student’s current grade or if you registered more than once for the same student.

If you want a refund less a $50 fee, you will need to forward your receipt email to registrations@stanford.edu by April 4, 2025 at 10:00am Pacific Time.
If requested more than 40 days from order date before the deadline: you agree that you must also provide your mobile phone number, mailing address, bank account holder/payee full name for the refund to be made payable to, indicate whether you prefer check or direct deposit when you forward your receipt email. You also agree and accept that there are no refunds if you do not answer all follow-up questions within five consecutive days from Stanford April 2025 email date with subject line "Additional supplier/payee information is requested from Stanford University PLEASE READ / ACTION REQUIRED" .

Instructors

TED ALPER
Director, Stanford Math Circle. B.S. Harvard University, M.S. Stanford University

Ted Alper is the director of the Stanford Math Circle. Ted has worked at Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies since the early 1990s as an instructor in secondary mathematics, university mathematics, and java programming. From 1995 to 2007, he was the head coach for the San Francisco Bay Area teams in the American Regions Mathematics League, coaching them to four national championships. He is the founder of the Polya Mathematics Competition and is the author of papers on foundations of measurement in mathematical psychology and a co-author of papers on the use of technology in mathematics education.

His awards include the Samuel Greitzer Distinguished Coaching Award from the American Regions Mathematics League, the Edith May Sliffe award for distinguished middle school mathematics teaching from the Mathematical Association of America, and the Young Investigator of the Year Award from the Society for Mathematical Psychology.

Ted has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Harvard University and an M.S. in mathematics from Stanford University.

ANNE SHOR
Stanford Math Circle, Middle Instructor. M.S., Mathematics, Ohio State.

Anne has been a math circle student, and then teacher, in Ukraine for many years. Afterward, she has been working as a mechanical and software engineer in Ukraine and then in the U.S. for 30 years. She delights in rediscovering the power, beauty, and joy of math with her students.

ELENA PAVLOSKAIA
Stanford Math Circle, Middle Instructor. Ph.D., Moscow, Russia.

Elena Pavlovskaia has been teaching in Math Circles since 1976. She received her Ph.D. in mathematics in 1983 in Moscow, Russia. Elena is an expert in computational geometry and computer vision.

JACK ROSENBERG
Stanford Math Circle, Elementary Instructor.

Jack Rosenberg completed his BS in Computer Science and Economics at Tufts University in Medford, MA. He has worked with Berkeley Math Circle for 5 years and is excited to begin working with Stanford Math Circle as well! Some of his interests include playing, teaching, and discussing strategy and board games.

PETER KOROTEEV
Stanford Math Circle, Elementary Instructor. B.S. and M.S., Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology PhD in Mathematics, University of Minnesota.

Peter Koroteev earned his BS and MS at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology where he studied theoretical physics and mathematics. Peter came to the United States for his Ph.D. studies at the University of Minnesota, which he completed in 2012. He was also a postdoctoral fellow at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, ON, Canada. Presently, Peter is a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley and does research in mathematical physics and string theory. Prof. Koroteev has been working in the educational system through his entire career — from teaching at math summer school in Russia to his experience as a teaching assistant in grad school to, finally, his present work as a lecturer.

DILIP BARMAN
B.S. Johns Hopkins University; graduate degrees in computer science from Marist College and Brown University.

Dilip Barman teaches elementary and middle school math in North Carolina. He is involved with the Chapel Hill (NC) Math Circle and speaks at math teacher conferences on topics such as introducing elementary school students to discrete math and graph theory and inspiring children with challenge problems.

Dilip has an applied mathematics degree from Johns Hopkins University and graduate computer science degrees from Marist College and Brown University.

MASON KLEPP
Stanford Math Circle, Elementary Instructor.

A recent graduate of the University of Oregon, Mason Klepp is a continuing student of abstract mathematics, physics, and philosophy. Having attended six institutions of higher learning throughout his education, he is passionate about unique learning environments which are fun, student centered, and demonstrate the beauty in a subject; an attitude he intends to bring to the classroom through the SMC Elementary program. He has two years of math circle experience at the Eugene Math Circle, and has been an instructor at both the Stanford and Berkeley Math Circles since Fall 2022.

BORIS KRUK
M.S., Applied Mathematics, Moscow State University, Stanford Math Circle, Middle School Instructor

Boris worked as a math circle instructor in Ukraine and Russia for many years. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in Kyiv, Ukraine. For over 25 years, Boris has worked as a software engineer in a leading CAD company in Boston, MA. Boris is an expert in numerical methods in the area of computational geometry.

Yul Inn
Middle School Circle Instructor.

After a career as a software engineer, Yul Inn retired and founded Fun Math Club to offer math enrichment programs to upper elementary through high school students. In addition to Fun Math Club, Yul has been active in Bay Area math circles for over 10 years. He has MS degrees in math and computer science, and three software patents.
